Baicapil

INCIPropanediol, Aqua, Arginine, Lactic Acid, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Germ Extract, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Sodium Benzoate, Gluconolactone, Calcium Gluconate

A three botanical blend (soy, wheat sprouts, baicalin from Chinese skullcap). Activates Wnt and β-catenin signalling in dermal papilla cells. From Provital, Spain.

What you need to know

🌿

What it is

A patented blend of three botanicals: baicalin (from Chinese skullcap), soy isoflavones, and wheat sprout extract. Developed by Provital, Spain.

What it does

Activates Wnt and β-catenin signalling in dermal papilla cells. Induces telomerase. Upregulates IGF1 and VEGF growth factors.

Best for

Telogen effluvium, diffuse age related thinning, anyone preferring botanical actives, stacking with other gentle ingredients.

⚠️

Avoid if

You have a soy or wheat allergy. Both are part of the blend. Always check the full ingredient list before applying.

How it actually works

Baicapil's three botanical components target different parts of the hair growth signalling network.

🧬

Baicalin → Wnt pathway

The flavonoid from Chinese skullcap stimulates Wnt3a, Wnt5a and disheveled 2. The master regulators that move follicles into anagen growth.

🌾

Soy isoflavones → DHT

Mild oestrogenic activity helps counter the DHT driven mechanism behind androgenetic thinning. Anti androgen effect is gentle, not pharmaceutical strength.

🌱

Wheat sprouts → nutrients

Provides amino acids, peptides, and growth factors. Once a follicle is awakened, it needs the building blocks to actually produce hair.

What the clinical data shows

From Provital's 6 month clinical trial of a Baicapil containing product:

Density
+22%

increase in hairs per cm² (183 to 223)

Anagen
+10.7%

more growing phase hairs

Telogen
−34.1%

fewer resting phase hairs

Hair fall
−60.6%

reduction in shedding over 6 months

Honest caveat The headline numbers come from Provital's own study, presented at industry conferences but not published in a peer reviewed journal. The mechanism is supported by independent published work on baicalin's effect on Wnt and β-catenin signalling in mice (BMB Reports, 2018). We treat the stats as promising rather than definitively proven.

Baicapil vs the alternatives

vs Minoxidil

Minoxidil has dramatically more clinical data and stronger absolute results. Baicapil is gentler with no shedding cycle, but evidence is weaker.

Redensyl has slightly stronger evidence (independent published studies). Different mechanisms, no overlap. They complement each other.

AnaGain has the strongest evidence (peer reviewed published study). Different mechanism. AnaGain hits FGF7 and noggin, Baicapil hits Wnt and β-catenin.

Stack all three?

Yes. They target different pathways with no known antagonism. That's exactly why all three appear in our Hair Thrivee+ formulation.

Side effects and how to use

Side effect profile of the active Clean record at cosmetic concentrations (typically 1 to 4%). No dependency, no shedding cycle. Considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding (check with your doctor for personal advice).
Allergy notes Baicapil contains soy (Glycine soja germ extract) and wheat (Triticum vulgare germ extract). Anyone with soy allergy should avoid. Most people with wheat sensitivity tolerate topical wheat extracts, but patch test first if you've reacted to wheat containing skincare before.
About the standard formulation Baicapil's INCI list includes propanediol (a gentle plant derived solvent), arginine and lactic acid (skin friendly buffers), and sodium benzoate plus gluconolactone as preservatives. All are commonly used in cosmetics with clean safety records.
How to use Apply twice daily directly to the scalp at the roots. Massage 30 to 60 seconds, leave on. Stack with Redensyl and AnaGain. They hit different pathways with no antagonism.

Common questions

What concentration of Baicapil actually works?

Provital recommends 2 to 4% in finished formulations. Our Hair Thrivee+ uses 3%, the upper middle of the range.

How long until I see results?

Like all gentle hair actives, judge results at month 3 minimum. Reduced shedding usually shows up first (around weeks 4 to 6), with regrowth following.

Is the soy content a problem for hormone sensitive conditions?

Topical application means very low systemic absorption, far below dietary soy intake. If you have specific oestrogen sensitive concerns, consult your doctor before any product containing soy.

What is Chinese skullcap and is it safe?

Scutellaria baicalensis has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. The standardised baicalin extract used in cosmetics has a clean topical safety record. Different from American skullcap, which is a different species.

Why is the evidence weaker than for AnaGain or Redensyl?

The headline numbers come from Provital's own conference presented study, not peer reviewed publications. The underlying mechanism is supported by independent peer reviewed work, but the consumer facing efficacy claims rest on industry data.

What's propanediol doing in the INCI?

Propanediol is the main solvent in Baicapil's standard formulation (35 to 55% of the product). It's a plant derived alternative to propylene glycol, generally well tolerated, and helps the actives penetrate the scalp.
