Does rosemary oil work for hair growth? Probably a little, for mild thinning and hair fall, if you use it properly for at least three months. That is the honest answer, and it is better than it sounds. Two human trials now point the same way. One is small and old, the other is newer and paid for by a company that sells rosemary oil. Neither is a reason to drop minoxidil if it is working for you, and both are good reasons to try rosemary oil if you are starting to notice more hair in the shower drain.

Here is the 30-second version for Singapore.

Quick answer: who should use rosemary oil

You are Best move Why
Early thinning or more hair fall than usual, healthy scalp Rosemary oil on the scalp 2 to 3 times a week for 3 to 6 months Low cost, low risk, and the trials that exist all ran at least 90 days
You know you will skip anything messy or fiddly A ready-mixed rosemary hair oil instead of pure essential oil No measuring drops, no separate carrier oil, so you actually keep using it
Receding temples, visible scalp through the part, family history Topical minoxidil 5 percent (Pharmacy-Only at Watsons and Guardian), with rosemary oil as an extra Minoxidil has decades of trial data. Rosemary is the add-on, not the replacement
Pregnant, breastfeeding, on chemo, or with a flaring scalp condition Talk to your doctor first Pure rosemary essential oil is on the avoid list in pregnancy and breastfeeding

The evidence in one table

Most articles on rosemary oil quote one study and stop. There are really four pieces of research worth knowing, and only two of them were done on people.

Study Who and how long What it found How much to trust it
Panahi et al., 2015, SKINmed 100 men with pattern hair loss, Iran, 6 months, rosemary oil vs 2 percent minoxidil Both groups gained hair count by month 6, no significant difference between them. Nothing visible at month 3. Less scalp itch with rosemary Decent design, small, men only, never repeated at the same size
Patel et al., 2025, Cureus 82 men and women analysed, mostly Asian, India, 90 days, two rosemary blends vs plain coconut oil Rosemary-castor oil: hair growth rate up 47.6 percent and density up 32.2 percent from baseline, vs 21.1 and 10.0 percent for coconut oil. Hair fall on a comb test roughly halved Includes women and Asian participants, which helps. Funded by the company that sells one of the oils, and coconut oil is not a true placebo
Murata et al., 2013 Lab test, no people Rosemary extract cut 5-alpha reductase activity by 82 to 95 percent at high doses Explains why it might work. Says nothing about what reaches your scalp
Oh et al., 2014, Toxicological Research Mice, 4 weeks, 3 percent peppermint oil Peppermint grew more follicles than minoxidil in mice Animal study only. Interesting, not proof

Put together: two small human trials, run on different populations, both saw a benefit from rosemary oil over three to six months. That is more than most hair oils on a Watsons shelf can claim, and less than a drug needs. Dermatologists generally land in the same place: a reasonable add-on, or a first try for mild thinning, not a stand-in for proven treatment when hair loss is moving fast.

How rosemary oil works on the scalp

There are two working theories, and they probably both play a part.

Blood flow. Rosemary is thought to improve circulation in the scalp, much like minoxidil, which means more oxygen and nutrients reaching the follicle during its growth phase. The Panahi authors saw this as the most likely reason rosemary kept pace with minoxidil.

DHT. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the hormone that shrinks follicles in genetic hair loss. Your scalp makes it from testosterone using an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. The prescription drug finasteride works by switching that enzyme off. In the Murata lab work, rosemary extract reduced the same enzyme's activity by a similar amount to finasteride, at high concentrations, in a test tube. On a real scalp, at the strength of a hair oil, the effect will be far smaller. The fair way to say it: rosemary may help reduce the impact of DHT on your follicles. It is not a drug and it does not work like one.

There is a third, duller reason it helps. People who oil and massage their scalp twice a week are paying attention to their scalp twice a week. Gentle massage on its own has been linked to thicker hair in small studies, which is why the routine matters as much as the bottle.

Rosemary and castor oil: does the carrier matter?

The 2025 trial tested rosemary essential oil mixed into cold-pressed castor oil, and that simple blend matched the branded rosemary-lavender oil on density and came close on growth rate. Castor oil does not have its own strong hair-growth evidence, but it is thick, it stays on the scalp, and it conditions the lengths, so it makes a sensible base.

Your carrier choice is mostly about hair type and how much grease you can live with:

  • Castor is the heaviest. Good for thick, dry or coarse hair, a lot for fine hair.
  • Coconut is mid-weight and soaks into the hair shaft. Good for dry lengths.
  • Jojoba is closest to your own scalp oil. Best for oily scalps and fine hair in Singapore humidity.
  • Grapeseed is the lightest. Pick it if your scalp goes greasy by lunchtime.

Ready-mixed oils usually blend two or three of these. Ours uses castor and coconut as the base with jojoba and grapeseed to lighten it.

How to use rosemary oil for hair growth

The people who see results and the people who give up at week four usually bought similar oils. The difference is the routine.

If you bought a pure essential oil (Gya Labs, Botanica Culture, Hysses):

  • Dilute it. Pure rosemary essential oil is too strong to use neat. Aim for 2 to 3 percent, which is 3 to 5 drops per 10ml of carrier oil, or 6 to 10 drops per tablespoon.
  • Patch test. Dab a little on your inner elbow and wait 24 hours before the first scalp use.
  • Apply to the scalp, not the lengths. Part your hair in sections, drop the oil along each part, and massage with your fingertips in slow circles for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Leave it on. At least an hour, or overnight on a pillowcase you do not mind staining. The 2025 trial left it on for four hours.
  • Two to three times a week. Every day is not better. You are aiming for six months of habit, not a greasy scalp.

If you bought a ready-mixed hair oil (Aromatica Root Enhancer, Ayumi, Efreshme Rosemary & Mint):

  • Skip the carrier oil. It is already diluted.
  • A few drops straight onto the scalp and roots, massage for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Leave it for 1 to 2 hours or overnight, then shampoo. Two to three times a week.

Either way, take a phone photo of the same patch of scalp, in the same light, at week 0, 8, 16 and 24. You will not trust your memory, and you should not. By week 16 the photos will tell you whether it is worth carrying on.

Does rosemary oil work for women?

The Panahi trial only recruited men, which is why it was easy to dismiss for female hair fall. The 2025 trial included women and still saw a benefit, though it did not report results separately by sex and did not diagnose the cause of anyone's thinning.

That last point matters for women. Female hair fall in Singapore is often not genetic. Iron deficiency, thyroid problems, crash dieting, stress and the months after giving birth are all common triggers, and no oil fixes a low ferritin level. If your hair fall came on suddenly or you are losing hair all over rather than at the part, get a blood test from your GP before you spend six months on rosemary. Our guide to hair fall treatment in Singapore covers the medical side, and the postpartum hair fall guide covers the year after birth.

If your hair loss is past the early stage (scalp showing through the part, temples going back, more than 100 to 150 hairs a day for over three months), rosemary oil alone will not be enough. Add topical minoxidil from Watsons or Guardian, keep rosemary as the habit, and review at six months. For a cosmetic system aimed at the follicle itself, our Hair Thrivee+ Set (S$62.50) combines AnaGain, Redensyl and Baicapil across shampoo, conditioner, serum and mask. We compare those three actives against minoxidil in AnaGain vs Redensyl vs Minoxidil.

Side effects and who should skip it

  • Irritation and contact dermatitis. Mostly from pure essential oil used neat or too strong. Dilute, patch test, and stop if your scalp turns red or itchy.
  • Burning or stinging. A properly made rosemary and peppermint hair oil should not burn. If yours does, the essential oil is too concentrated for your scalp. Dilute it further or stop.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. NParks and most aromatherapy references advise avoiding rosemary essential oil while pregnant or breastfeeding. Ready-mixed hair oils contain far less, but check with your doctor before starting anything new.
  • Active scalp conditions. Seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema flares or broken skin: see a dermatologist first. Oil on an inflamed scalp can make dandruff-type flaking worse.
  • Shedding at the start. The early shed some people get on minoxidil has not been reported with rosemary oil. If you shed heavily after starting, look for another trigger.

FAQ

How long does rosemary oil take to work for hair growth?

Give it at least three months, ideally six. The 2025 trial measured its results at 90 days. The Panahi trial saw nothing at three months and clear gains at six. If you stop at week eight, you stopped before anyone in either study saw results.

Can I leave rosemary oil in overnight?

Yes, as long as it is diluted. Use an old pillowcase. If overnight feels too heavy on fine hair, an hour or two before you shampoo is enough.

Can I use rosemary oil with minoxidil?

Yes. Apply minoxidil to a dry scalp first and let it dry fully, then apply rosemary oil, ideally on the evenings you plan to wash the next morning. Do not mix them in one bottle. If your scalp gets irritated, drop the rosemary oil for two weeks, then bring it back.

Is rosemary oil good for hair fall in women?

It can help, and the 2025 trial included women. But female hair fall often has a medical trigger like low iron, thyroid problems or a recent pregnancy, which oil cannot fix. If the shedding is sudden or all over your head, see a GP for a blood test first.

Rosemary oil or Hair Thrivee+, which should I choose?

They do different jobs. Rosemary oil is one ingredient with a modest clinical signal, used as a scalp massage two or three evenings a week. Hair Thrivee+ is a four-step shower routine built on AnaGain, Redensyl and Baicapil. If you want one product and one habit, take the oil. If you want a fuller routine, take the Set. Plenty of people use both.

What is the difference between rosemary essential oil and rosemary hydrosol?

Essential oil is the concentrated steam-distilled part and must be diluted to 2 to 5 percent. Hydrosol is the water left over from distillation, much milder, and used as a spray. Both trials used oil, not hydrosol.

Can I make rosemary oil at home?

You can soak dried rosemary in a carrier oil for two to four weeks. That gives you an infused oil with far fewer active compounds than distilled essential oil. It will condition your hair and smell nice, but it is not what the trials tested.

The bottom line

Rosemary oil is one of the few hair oils with human trial data behind it, and both trials point the same way: a modest benefit over three to six months, with very little downside. It is a sensible first move for early thinning and hair fall, and a good habit to keep alongside minoxidil. It is not a fix for fast, advancing hair loss, and it will not touch hair fall caused by low iron or hormones.

Whatever you buy, the winner is the oil you will still be using in month six. That is why we made the Efreshme Rosemary & Mint Revival Hair Oil ready to use: rosemary and peppermint in a castor and coconut base, biotin added, a fresh herbal scent, and nothing to measure, for S$18.90.
