Most articles about IPL and dark skin are written by companies selling IPL devices, which is why they all arrive at the same conclusion: yes, with the right device, which happens to be ours. Here is the version that is actually useful. IPL works on a contrast between dark hair and lighter skin. The more melanin sits in your skin, the more of that light your skin absorbs instead of your follicles, and the closer you get to a burn rather than a result. That is physics, not marketing, and no amount of "advanced technology" language changes it.

So the honest answer to "does IPL work on dark skin" depends entirely on which dark you mean. Medium-brown and olive skin, yes, carefully. Deep brown and black skin, no, and you should not let anyone sell you a home device for it. This guide gets you to your answer in about two minutes.

The short answer, by skin type

Dermatology uses the Fitzpatrick scale, six types running from very fair skin that always burns to deeply pigmented skin that never burns. Every serious IPL safety guideline is written against it, so find yourself here first.

If you landed on V or VI, skip to the section on what to use instead. It is a shorter route to smooth skin than arguing with a device that was never going to work.

Why melanin is the whole problem

IPL fires a broad spectrum of light. Melanin absorbs that light and converts it to heat. In the ideal case the darkest thing in the treatment zone is the pigment inside your hair shaft, so the heat travels down to the follicle and damages it while the surrounding skin stays cool enough to be fine.

Now add melanin to the skin itself. The light no longer has a single obvious target. Some of the energy is absorbed at the surface, before it ever reaches the follicle. You get two problems at once: less energy where you want it, so the treatment underperforms, and more heat where you do not want it, so the epidermis takes the hit. That is why deeper skin tones report both worse results and worse side effects from the same device on the same setting.

Clinics get around this with wavelength. A 1064nm Nd:YAG laser is far less interested in melanin than the broad flash of an IPL, so it slides past the pigment in your skin and heats the follicle instead. An IPL cannot do that, because emitting a wide band of light is the entire point of the technology. This is a hardware limit, not a settings problem. What actually goes wrong

Three things, in rough order of how often they happen.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The most common outcome, and the most frustrating, because you set out to fix a cosmetic issue and created a new one. Melanocytes in deeper phototypes are more numerous and react harder to heat and inflammation. Irritate them and they respond by making more pigment, so you end up with dark patches exactly where you treated. One review puts the risk of post-treatment pigment change at roughly three times higher for Fitzpatrick IV and V than for I to III. Treat that number as directional rather than precise, but the direction is not in dispute.

Burns and blistering. Less common but genuinely serious. There is a published case report of second-degree burns after IPL in a patient with Fitzpatrick IV skin, which is the type most people assume is safely inside the envelope. It usually follows one of three mistakes: too high an energy level, treating recently tanned skin, or stacking flashes over the same spot.

Hypopigmentation. Rarer, and the one nobody warns you about, because it can be permanent. The heat damages melanocytes badly enough that the patch comes back lighter than the surrounding skin and stays that way. On deeper skin the contrast is obvious.

If you are Fitzpatrick IV, here is how to do it properly

Type IV is the real decision point. It is inside the envelope, but only if you treat the process seriously rather than as an inconvenience between you and smooth legs.

  1. Patch test, and actually wait. Pick a discreet patch, shave it, flash it once on the lowest level, then leave it alone for 48 to 72 hours. You are not checking whether it hurt. You are checking for pigment change that shows up two days later, which is the whole point of waiting.
  2. Live on the low levels. On a five-level device, levels 1 and 2 are your working range and level 3 is an aspiration you may never need. Resist the logic that a higher setting means faster results. On type IV, a higher setting mostly means a higher chance of restarting from a pigment problem.
  3. Never treat tanned skin. A tan is fresh melanin sitting right at the surface, exactly where you least want it. Give it two to four weeks after real sun exposure before you flash that area. In Singapore this is not a theoretical concern, it is most weekends.
  4. Shave, never wax or pluck. IPL needs the follicle present and the surface hair gone. Waxing removes the target. Shaving keeps the pigment in the follicle where the light can reach it.
  5. One pass, no stacking. Overlap slightly, never hover and refire on the same square centimetre. Stacked flashes are how a safe level becomes an unsafe one.
  6. Sunscreen after, seriously. Treated skin is temporarily more reactive to UV. Skipping sunscreen for a week after a session is a reliable way to produce the exact pigmentation you were trying to avoid.

You have three genuinely good options and one bad one. The bad one is buying a home IPL device anyway and running it on level 1 hoping for the best.

Electrolysis Destroys each follicle individually with a fine probe. Skin colour is irrelevant, and so is hair colour, which makes it the only method that works on grey, blonde and red hair too. Genuinely permanent. Also genuinely slow. Charged by time, typically per 15 or 30 minute block. Fine for upper lip or chin, impractical for legs.

One thing to watch when you call a clinic: "SHR" is a treatment mode, not a wavelength, and some SHR machines are diode, some are Nd:YAG, and a few are essentially high-repetition IPL. Ask what wavelength the machine emits. If the person on the phone cannot answer, that tells you something useful about the clinic.

Tanned skin counts, even if you are usually fair

This catches out more people in Singapore than any other rule. Fitzpatrick type describes your baseline, not your skin this week. Two weeks of poolside afternoons can move a type III into type IV territory temporarily, and the device does not care that it is a tan rather than your natural tone. The melanin is there either way.

Practical version: if you can see a tan line, do not flash that area. Wait two to four weeks, or treat somewhere the sun does not reach. This applies to self-tanner too, which sits at the surface and absorbs light enthusiastically.

Nothing about the physics changes across the causeway. What changes is the clinic pricing and the availability of Nd:YAG specifically. Kuala Lumpur and Penang clinics quote noticeably less per session than Singapore chains for comparable treatments, which shifts the calculation if you are Fitzpatrick V or VI and were weighing a device against a course of clinic sessions. Home devices ship freely into MY through the usual marketplaces, and the same warning applies with more force: skin tone sensors are rarer at the low end, and a listing claiming "safe for all skin tones" on a S$40 handset is claiming something the hardware cannot deliver.

Is IPL safe for dark skin?

It depends how dark. Fitzpatrick I to III is straightforward. Type IV is safe with low energy levels and a proper 48 to 72 hour patch test. Types V and VI are not appropriate for standard IPL at any setting, because the light is absorbed by skin melanin before it reaches the follicle, which raises the risk of burns and pigment change without delivering the result.

Does IPL work on brown skin?

On medium and olive brown skin, usually yes, though slower than on fair skin because you are working at lower energy. On deep brown skin it works poorly and unsafely. A 1064nm Nd:YAG laser at a clinic is the method that actually works on deeper tones.

Can I use IPL on tanned skin?
