Waking up with a puffy face is fluid, not fat. Lying flat for seven hours lets water settle into the soft tissue around your eyes and cheeks, and last night's dinner decides how much of it there is. Cold is the fastest way to move it. Gentle massage moves the rest. Most of it drains on its own within an hour or two of being upright, so the real goal is to speed that up and give your face less to drain tomorrow.
Here is the 10-minute routine, what actually works ranked by speed, and the few signs that mean puffiness is not a skincare problem at all.

Why your face is puffy in the morning
You were lying down. During the day, gravity pulls fluid toward your legs. At night it spreads out evenly, and the loose skin around the eyes holds it most visibly. That is why the puffiness is worst right after you wake up and fades as you move around.
Salt. Sodium makes your body hold on to water. Singapore residents average about 3,620 mg of sodium a day, according to the National Nutrition Survey 2022, against a recommended limit of under 2,000 mg, roughly one teaspoon of salt. Nine in 10 of us go over. A late plate of char kway teow, a bowl of mala or instant noodles shows up on your face the next morning.
Alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates you, and a dehydrated body hangs on to the water it has. The result is a puffy, flushed face the morning after.
Short or broken sleep. A bad night shows up as puffy eyes for most people. Sleeping face-down or on one side makes it worse on that side.
Crying. Tears and rubbing inflame the thin skin around the eyes. Same fix as everything else here: cold and time.
Allergies. Histamine makes small blood vessels leak fluid into the tissue. If your eyes are also itchy, your nose is blocked and it is worse at home than on holiday, dust mites in your bedding are a likely suspect. They thrive in warm, humid bedrooms, which describes most bedrooms here.
The 10-minute morning de-puff
1. Get upright and move (1 minute). Sit up, walk to the kitchen, drink a glass of water. Gravity starts draining your face the moment you stop lying down.
2. Cold, for 3 to 5 minutes. This is the step that does most of the work. Cold makes the small blood vessels near the skin surface narrow, so less fluid sits in the tissue and redness drops. Splash cold water, hold a cold wet face cloth on your eyes, or glide chilled facial globes over damp skin. Keep any cold tool moving and never put frozen ice straight on bare skin for long, it can burn.
3. Drain, for 2 minutes. With light pressure, stroke from the centre of your face outward to the ears, then down the sides of the neck toward the collarbone. Under the eyes, go from the inner corner outward and barely press. Our lymphatic drainage face massage guide has the full stroke sequence. A chilled jade roller does both steps 2 and 3 at once.
4. Skincare over damp skin (1 minute). A watery toner and a light moisturiser. Skip heavy, rich eye creams on puffy mornings; they can make the eye area look shinier, not flatter.
5. Eat breakfast without more salt (optional). Swapping a salty breakfast for fruit, eggs or oats keeps you from topping the fluid back up.
What actually works, ranked
| Method | How fast | How long it lasts | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold (globes, cold cloth, cold water) | Minutes | An hour or two | The best quick fix. Do this first. |
| Drainage massage or roller | Minutes | An hour or two | Good add-on to cold, best on cheeks and jaw. |
| Being upright and moving | 30 to 60 minutes | All day | Happens anyway. Cold just gets you there sooner. |
| Caffeine eye cream or serum | Minutes | Short | Mostly the cold of the gel doing the work. See below. |
| Less salt and alcohol at dinner | Next morning | Ongoing | The only fix that prevents it. Least fun, most effective. |
| Sleeping with your head slightly raised | Next morning | Ongoing | Worth trying if mornings are your worst time. |
Do caffeine eye creams work?
A little, and probably not for the reason on the box. Caffeine does narrow blood vessels, which is why it is in so many eye products. But when researchers ran a double-blind trial on 34 people, comparing a 3 percent caffeine gel against the same gel without caffeine, the difference was not significant. Only 8 of the 34 responded to the caffeine itself. The authors put most of the de-puffing down to the cooling effect of the gel.
So if you like your caffeine serum, keep it in the fridge. If you are about to buy one just for puffiness, put the money into a proper cold tool instead, because cold is what is doing the job either way.
The best cold tool for a puffy face
Anything cold works. The difference between tools is control and how long the cold lasts.
- Cold water or a cold cloth: free, fine for the whole face, gone in seconds.
- A chilled jade roller: covers cheeks, jaw and forehead fast and adds the drainage stroke. The GlowSculpt Duo in Green Jade comes with a gua sha for the jawline, available on our website at S$19.90.
- Facial ice globes: the most control around the eyes and nose, and the handle keeps your warm hand off the cold part. The Efreshme IceLift Facial Globes are solid stainless steel, so they survive being dropped on a tiled bathroom floor. Keep them in the fridge, not the freezer. Rose Gold, available on our website at S$28.90.

Fix it the night before
Watch the late dinner. Soup noodles, mala, bak kut teh with extra salted vegetables and anything with a lot of soy or chilli sauce are heavy on sodium. You do not need to give them up, just not at 10pm before an important morning.
Match every drink with water. One glass of water per alcoholic drink, and another before bed.
Sleep on your back with an extra pillow. A slightly raised head lets fluid drain overnight instead of pooling. Face-down sleeping is the worst position for morning puffiness.
Wash your pillowcase weekly. If allergies are part of the problem, hot-wash bedding and use dust mite covers. If you are still waking up itchy and swollen, a pharmacist can suggest an antihistamine that will not knock you out.
Do not drink a litre of water right before bed. Stay hydrated through the day instead. A big glass at midnight just means a broken night.
Puffy face or just a fuller face?
De-puffing only shifts fluid. If your face looks the same at 8am and 8pm, it is not puffiness, and no amount of cold will change it. Fullness under the chin is usually fat or skin laxity, which is a different conversation, covered in our guide on how to get rid of a double chin. Dark circles that stay after the swelling goes down come from pigment or thin skin, and our guide to under-eye devices for dark circles is the better read.
When a puffy face needs a doctor
Normal morning puffiness fades by late morning and gets better when you cut salt and alcohol. See a GP if any of these apply:
- The swelling lasts all day, or keeps getting worse over days or weeks.
- Your ankles or legs are swollen too, or your urine looks foamy. Kidneys that are not clearing fluid can show up in the face first.
- You also feel unusually tired, cold all the time, have dry skin or are gaining weight without a reason. An underactive thyroid can cause a puffy face.
- The swelling is on one side only, with pain, fever, a toothache or sinus pressure. That points to an infection, which needs treatment, not a cold globe.
Call 995 straight away if facial or lip swelling comes with hives, a tight throat or chest, trouble breathing, or dizziness. That can be anaphylaxis. Use an adrenaline auto-injector if you have been prescribed one, and do not drive yourself to hospital.
Depuffing FAQ
How do I depuff my face fast?
Cold first, then massage. Three to five minutes of cold water, a cold cloth or chilled facial globes, followed by two minutes of light strokes from the centre of your face out to the ears and down the neck. Most people see a difference in under 10 minutes.
Why is my face puffy when I wake up?
Lying flat lets fluid spread into the soft tissue of your face, especially around the eyes. Salt, alcohol, short sleep, crying and allergies all add to it. It usually drains within an hour or two of being upright.
How long does morning face puffiness last?
Usually an hour or two after you get up. If it lasts all day or keeps getting worse, see a GP.
Does ice reduce face puffiness?
Yes. Cold narrows the small blood vessels near the skin surface, so less fluid sits in the tissue. Wrap ice in a cloth or use a chilled tool and keep it moving, because frozen ice held on bare skin can cause a cold burn.
Do caffeine eye creams reduce puffiness?
Only a little. In a 34-person double-blind trial, a caffeine gel did not beat the same gel without caffeine by a significant margin, and the researchers credited most of the effect to the gel's cooling. Keeping any eye product in the fridge helps more than the caffeine does.
How do I stop waking up with a puffy face?
Eat less salt at dinner, drink water alongside alcohol, sleep on your back with your head slightly raised, and wash your bedding weekly if you have allergies.
